| Fabric boots are not usually made only from fabric: they tend to be a mixture of fabric and nubuck/suede (the latter providing strength and support). Fabric boots are actually not that much lighter than the equivalent leather models, but they do tend to be rather more breathable. Get a pair with a decent waterproof lining e.g. Gore-Tex or eVENT and you should have an utterly waterproof boot.
